Strong message or sick sight? Some find pro-life truck gross; groups plan vigilsPeter Marcus, DDN Staff WriterFriday, August 22, 2008 | | | UNUSUAL ADVERTISING — This truck in Arvada definitely got noticed. Denver Daily News photo by Peter Marcus. |
A parked truck in an Arvada shopping center yesterday displaying photographs of aborted fetuses and dead babies horrified some folks who caught glimpses of the pro-life message.
It was unknown whether the truck was affiliated with pro-life groups planning demonstrations at the Democratic National Convention next week. Activists plan to officially unveil plans at a news conference today. The “A Prayer For Change” event is expected to include public rallies and vigils in Denver parks, as well as demonstrations throughout the city, including at hotels where various Democratic delegates will be staying.
“We are coming to the DNC in Denver to pray for an end to abortion and the tragic crushing of human rights and social injustice that abortion produces,” said Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition, who is leading organization efforts. “Through prayer and cutting edge public events, pro-life activists intend to expose the radical pro-abortion policies of Senator (Barack) Obama.”
Father disgusted
One father who was standing near the pro-life advertisements in Arvada said he was disgusted by the imagery and concerned for his children who may have caught a glimpse of it. Arvada resident Jim Smith wrote down the license plate number of the truck to file a formal complaint.
“It’s ridiculous to have pictures like this on the side of a truck,” he said. “My kids — they don’t need to see this.”
Human Life International
The advertisements on the truck were sponsored by Human Life International. The signs included messages like, “I am a person,” and “You shall not murder.”
In addition to prayer vigils, the organized pro-life events surrounding the DNC will also include leaving 1,400 roses on the ground to “honor the children who have died from abortion and the women who have been diminished and wounded through abortion,” Mahoney told the Denver Daily News in a previous interview.
Focus on Obama
The focus of the campaigns in Denver will also be on Obama’s pro-choice platform.
“As a 23-year-old woman of faith, I am appalled at the radical and troubling abortion politics of Senator Obama,” said Kaitlin Clare, program director for the Christian Defense Coalition. “Senator Obama wants to take us back to radical pro-abortion posture that is both archaic and disturbing.”
