Immigration enforcement advocates will gather in Denver this Tax Day to argue that taxpayers carry a heavy financial burden because the government does not do enough to enforce its current immigration laws.
The rally at the Capitol this afternoon is part of a national movement called the Tax Day Tea Party. The grassroots campaign asks Americans to encourage lawmakers to stop “out of control government spending.” Part of the dialogue includes illegal immigration.
Immigration enforcement advocates say Americans spend tens of billions of dollars annually in extra taxes because of illegal immigration. Americans for Legal Immigration PAC said amnesty for illegal aliens would increase the annual tax deficit by $29 billion, and cost taxpayers $2.6 trillion.
“The vast majority of attendees and organizers with Tax Day Tea Party events are very concerned about the impact of illegal immigration on tax levels,” said William Gheen, president of ALIPAC. “Washington refuses to represent the will of the people and that is the definition of taxation without representation.”
Reports surfaced last week that President Obama plans to address immigration reform by searching for a path to legalize millions of illegal immigrants. The New York Times reported that Obama will speak publicly about the issue in May. Bipartisan committees will be assembled over the summer to develop legislation expected to be brought forward as early as the fall, administration officials told the Times.
Gheen, however, said that 80 percent of Americans want more immigration enforcement instead of paths to legalize at least 12 million illegal immigrants.
Amnesty critics plan to hold signs this afternoon that read, “No taxation for illegal immigration,” “Illegal aliens steal our tax resources,” and “Secure our border, secure our taxes,” to name a few.
Not amnesty?
But Julie Gonzales, a political coordinator with the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, said Obama’s plan is anything but amnesty.
“We’re not talking amnesty, we’re not talking, ‘Hey, let’s give everybody a free ride.’ That’s not our proposal, nor is it Obama’s,” said Gonzales. “We’re talking about a legalization program that would bring folks who are currently living in the shadows into a fair and orderly process of legalization.”
“Folks on the other side of this issue think of an amnesty program as giving out candy in the streets,” added Gonzales. “But a legalization program would not look like that.”
She said there is no reason to believe that illegal immigrants cost taxpayers money, pointing to a 2006 state law that requires all Colorado residents who apply for state-funded benefits to provide proof that they are lawfully present in the United States.
“(House Bill 1023) has failed to find a single instance of an undocumented immigrant taking part in any service across the state,” said Gonzales. “Three years later, we’ve yet to find a single instance of this happening.”
Taxpayers would actually benefit from a path to citizenship for illegal aliens because immigrants would be paying income and payroll taxes. Gonzales said had a similar plan in 2006 been backed by lawmakers, the nation would have generated $66 billion from legalized immigrants.
“When you legalize undocumented workers, you bring more workers into the tax system,” she said.

Some anti-rights based initiative, which should not be covered by federal government, starts and the next thing you know there is another federal project to build a wall on the southern border of the united states. It is exactly high jacks of our freedom like this that send a mixed message in protests about taxes. Basically what you're saying with this message is taxes are too high but we would also like taxes higher. How else are people going to pay for more enforcement? Enforcement doesn't come cheap and it doesn't fall out of the sky. It is stupid conservative issues like this that were growing the government at an enormous rate during Bush. If you want to really fight the ILLEGAL immigration issue fight it by fighting the welfare state that these people come for it is the source of their food. |

Capitalism means no welfare state, and thus no magnet for immigrants who want handouts and are willing to get them illegally. Free immigration would logically follow free markets. |

Because the rallies are getting bigger, they are attracting all sorts of other groups: 9/11 "truthers", people obsessing about President Obama's birth certificate, and anti-immigrant groups. Unalienable rights are for everyone and do not stop at national borders. Freedom is for Hispanics and blacks as much as for whites. |

Citizens accept that breaking our laws results in proscribed punishments and full jails testify to the fact. They feel that they can pick and choose which laws are convenient for them to follow and willingly break those that are personally inconvenient. Illegal aliens, etc.. have no place in a free society, they cheapen what citizenship means, they erode the rights of citizens. The refusal to enforce immigration laws has lead to the destruction of our economy, it isn't any part of capitalism, it's only promoted by the same neo-cons, the far right extremes, who are no different to the far left extremes. Both extremes demand welfare subsidies to make up the differences in what illegals are paid, they feel comfortable doing so, because they've reduced the tax rates for themselves, and the burden largely falls on the working poor to middle class citizens.
Anyone who says anything different are the ones trying to exploit this movement against tax fraud and abuse. |

Cohen, when you paint with the broad brush of racism, you tend to get paint on those that you weren't intending to. 47% of Latino voters voted in favor of Proposition 200, the anti-illegal immigration measure that Arizona's voters passed into law in 2004. According to you, all of those Latino voters in Arizona who voted for Proposition 200 are "angry, hateful, racist, white losers". I would imagine that those Latino voters would be quite surprised to find out what you think of them. By the way, the Jews that were persecuted by the Nazis weren't lawbreakers who illegally entered another country, violated law after law after law, and then demanded to be given the same rights and privileges that Americans have. "Comprehensive immigration reform" is code for amnesty. President Reagan granted an amnesty in 1986. The illegal immigration problem is 10 times worse today than it was in 1986. Amnesties don't solve the problem of illegal immigration. We need to learn from our mistakes and quit repeating them. |

It is a known fact that an illegal alien getting on welfare is as easy as A) Having an anchor baby and signing it up for welfare and B) Buying false ID documents and signing up for welfare.
