Immigrant rights advocates on Saturday gathered at a Northglenn church to show their support for federal legislation that would offer a path to legalize millions of illegal immigrants.
Pointing to the hardship current immigration laws pose for many families, including separating families through deportation, dozens of immigrants said the country is in need of comprehensive immigration reform.
The meeting at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church was attended by Congressman Jared Polis, D-Boulder, as well as by Illinois Democrat, Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez. The “Familias Unidas” immigration reform tour was part of a national effort, including 22 major cities.
“The United States has always been a beacon of hope and opportunity for immigrants, and our newest Americans continue to be a constant source of innovation and cultural renewal,” said Polis prior to the event. “But by tearing apart hard-working families and forcing millions of immigrants into the shadows, our broken immigration system weakens our nation.”
President Barack Obama has signaled his support for immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for as many as 12 million illegal immigrants. Bipartisan committees have assembled to develop legislation that is expected to be brought forward by as early as the fall.
Critics, however, say legalizing at least 12 million illegal immigrants would lead to population explosions that would lower wages for American workers and drain the nation’s resources. The nation’s illegal immigrant population has been estimated to be as high as 25 million.
“You bring in these 20 million illegal aliens, they then get citizenship, they then become part of the workforce legally, and every American will see his or her wages go down because these people will work at any level,” Frosty Wooldridge, a Louisville author and outspoken critic of expanding immigration, told the Denver Daily News in a recent interview. “All it’s going to do is literally break this country financially in half. It will lower the standard of living for all middle class Americans … you and me, we’re screwed.”
The “Familias Unidas” stop in Northglenn was also attended by Denver Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. The idea of the tour is to bring political and religious communities together to discuss the need for comprehensive immigration reform. The meeting Saturday was part prayer vigil, part town hall meeting, during which many immigrants spoke of hardship experienced as a result of current immigration laws.
Julie Gonzales, spokeswoman for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, pointed out that many immigrant families are mixed-status, meaning some are documented citizens and others are not. She said the pain of splitting those families apart can be tremendous.
“When the other side is talking about deporting 12 million people, a lot of the time what they’re talking about is breaking up 12 million families. That’s not a solution, that’s not workable at all,” said Gonzales. “What we’re proposing is a pathway to citizenship that keeps families together, and that’s going to help keep our economy back on track, and that’s going to keep families together.”
Polis added that with the current state of the economy, now is the perfect time for immigration reform.
“As we face growing economic and environmental challenges, we need immigration reform now more than ever to compete and thrive in the global economy,” he said.

However, you are stuck in the 19th century.
It is foolhardy in the extreme to pursue a 19th century immigration policy in the face of 21st century realities.
Some of those realities are:
1). The US is no longer a land of "wide open spaces". It is heavily populated.
2). At a time of massive unemployment, our economy has no use for massive numbers of new immigrants, especially those whose skills mean that what they can contribute to the economy is far less than what they need from the taxpayers.
That doesn't mean they are bad people, but just because most illegal aliens are decent human beings doesn't mean they are an asset to our economy or society.
Wake up. The wild west is long gone.
We need a 21st century immigration policy, not a 19th century immigration policy.
That means immigration must be CURTAILED, not expanded. We should only allow a small number of immigrants, people who have exceptional skills that can contribute to our society. |

George Bush supported amnesty, and a few other half-wits in the Republican Party. The establishment wing of the Democratic Party had its best shot at amnesty while George Bush was in office. If they could have pushed through amnesty, then when it led to disaster they could pin the blame on George Bush.
Now they don't have a Republican to pin the blame on. The Democrats are not stupid enough to destroy their party in order to pass legislation that is virulently anti-labor and anti-environment. |

Why should they get yet another priority when honest foreigners await patiently their turn, to enter on a permanent residency visa? This is not just about immigration as a whole or part, but OVERPOPULATION.
We know that the Sen. Harry Reid's and Nancy Pelosi's will lie to the American people and they are well and truly hypocrites. Not so long ago Harry Reid was a zealot against the illegal immigration invasion? To he defies all sense of his loyalty to the American worker, slaughtering and under funding E-Verify. This being a sensible, reliable tool, to eject illegal aliens from the workplace. This crowd of Democrats have allowed an estimated 300.000 illegal aliens to take stimulus jobs, plus used their political influence to impair many new immigration laws, such as abandoning ICE raids. It should be noted, that very few executives who hire illegal immigrants never see a prison cell? Their is little doubt in my mind, that the general public are going to be ignored, when it comes to an imminent AMNESTY E-Verify will be dropped, so will any heavy enforcement at the border, the National guard, so that the current waves of poor people will have easy access to jobs.
Any rumor of AMNESTY will entertain even more millions upon millions skirting the border patrol, hoping to be part of a path to citizenship or BLANKET AMNESTY? You cannot listen to the open border, free trade fanatics, businesses, faith based and radical groups as they all have something to--GAIN-- as they are ready to undermine any new laws that enforce immigration law. Illegal aliens are not the CAUSE of most of our problems, but they're certainly not the solution to them either. Illegal aliens contribute to all that's wrong with this country, from overburdened schools and healthcare facilities to stagnant wages.
Every job you cited has been and is being done by AMERICANS--or did you miss the news about Americans growing "depression gardens". Heck, one of my neighbors has a "pick your own" strawberry patch. Agribusiness is NOT needed to grow fruits and veggies and strange as it may seem, there was a time when these year-round fruits and veggies were the EXCEPTION rather than the rule. We can easily live without them, particularly when those of us who don't consume them are paying for them and for the cost of the healthcare and educations of the illegal aliens who provide employers with CHEAP labor.
And just who do you think 75% of construction workers are in this country (according to the Pew Hispanic Center)? AMERICANS. And if illegal aliens are so bright, then just why are their own countries such messes? Why are their own countries not taking advantage of their labor and their intelligence? Finally, paying taxes means NOTHING because in paying taxes, illegal aliens are simply displacing Americans as taxpayers, just as they displacing them from jobs. Americans with those jobs would be paying those taxes and probably more taxes because they'd be earning more taxable income. |

Whatever President Obama's good points are, and he has many, he was handpicked by the elite, a long time ago for a purpose. What purpose you say? Simple. The elite of this nation, have known for a long time that the nation was going down economically, socially, and otherwise. They knew this was a dangerous situation. They knew that if the standard politician like Hillary or McCain, where to become President, that the peons might erupt in uncontrolable anger at their poor economic positiion,etc. With President Obama in power, however, it creates a new dynamic. He being a black and white man, creates total confusion among the peons and they believe, wholeheartedly that he has the "answers". It's incredilbe how many scientists, and other thinkers have stated that they trust President Obama to "fix" things. Perceptive people will understand the implicaitions. It's dangerous when blind "trust" rather than questioning rules the day. And questioning or criticiscm becomes difficult, when you are talking about a black/white person. However, I wish all non-Enlish signs required an English translation. It would make it easier for newcomers to learn English.
In some areas of Los Angeles Spanish, Chinese, and other languages are far more prominent on signs and store fronts than is English.
Euro Disney got in trouble for selling an English language greeting card that did not have a French translation, We should be more careful about losing our language too. |

I have seen friends who worked construction lose their jobs after they were filled by low wage illegals and I have seen my neighborhood fill up with them only to be stricken by massive foreclosures when they couldn't pay their mortgages. I have been to the emergency room at Denver General where not one patient in the waiting room spoke English. I know there are good people in every group, but we simply can't be expected to give these people amnesty in this financial crisis. Obama and his idealist supporters are not listening to American Citizens, only to special interests. |

You definitely sound like an ignorant, parroting hearsays about California. True that CA has financial problems, but see that in comparison. CA, the eight largest economy in the world (If you assume CA to be a country), is short by about $30 billion. GM, a private corporation has debt over $180 billion, and the govt spent about $30 billion and they are going to put in another $30 on GM. How outrageous...!!! If CA was given that money it would have paid for medicare and education for millions.
CA contributes so much to the US economy and so much to feed the US. CA produces enough fruits and vegetables to feed the whole US.
The silicon valley in CA is home to cutting edge technology, leading the world. The beautiful little towns in silicon valley (Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Saratoga, etc) always make it to the top 10 best places to live in the US. Bay area has the highest percentage to college graduates in the US. CA is home to Stanford, UC Berkley, UCLA, CalTech, and numerous other leading top universities in the world.
San Francisco has made it to the top 30 best cities to live in the world (Only two US cities made it to the list SFO and Honolulu)

The globalist, multiculturalism, open border advocates, liberals & businesses profiting from and exploiting Illegal Aliens argue that they, the Illegal Aliens, pay tons of taxes, sure they all pay real estate taxes (in rent) and sales taxes (most states). Those working on the books approximately 35 % using stolen Social Security numbers or other fraudulent documents pay FICA and, perhaps, income taxes. But they're mostly ill-educated and low-skilled and pay very low taxes connected to their working. In fact, most claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, i.e. negative income tax! Of course, the remaining 65% of the Illegal Aliens working off the books typically work for cash and pay nothing except real estate taxes (in rent) and sales taxes (most states).
