Immigration fix urgedDenver Dems want Congress to make pathway to citizenshipPeter Marcus, DDN Staff WriterThursday, June 18, 2009 | |
The Democratic Party of Denver this week called on Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform that offers a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.
At its monthly meeting on Tuesday, the Democratic Party of Denver said the current system is “steeped in 44-year-old assumptions dating back to legislation created in 1965 that no longer addresses contemporary realities.”
The group backed a resolution calling for a pathway to citizenship for as many as 12 million illegal immigrants, and to reunite families that have been separated as the result of work place raids, such as the one at the Swift & Co meatpacking plant in Greeley in 2006.
“Immigration reform is arguably one of the foremost Civil Rights issues we face in the United States and in Colorado today,” said Cindy Lowery, chair of the Democratic Party of Denver. “No longer can we sit idly by and insist this issue be resolved on the federal level. I am proud that the Democratic Party of Denver has passed this resolution calling for a humane, fair, and comprehensive response from our elected officials on immigration reform.”
Lowery criticized state lawmakers for failing to pass legislation that would have offered in-state college tuition to illegal immigrants. The Tuition Equity bill failed in the Senate this year, just as it has on three previous occasions.
“The failure to pass meaningful legislation such as the Tuition Equity Bill is seen as a squandering of our investment in the youth who have attended U.S. schools, who have been acculturated to American society, and who represent the promise of our country’s intellectual capital and competitiveness in a global market,” read a statement from the Democratic Party of Denver.
But former Congressman Tom Tancredo, an outspoken critic of illegal immigration, said there already exists a path to citizenship for immigrants.
“There is a pathway to citizenship, we’ve had it for a long, long time,” he said. “It’s called, ‘Come in the door marked immigration, legal immigration.’”
President Barack Obama has signaled his support for immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship. Bipartisan committees have assembled to develop legislation that is expected to be brought forward by as early as the fall.
Population explosion?
Critics, however, say legalizing millions of illegal immigrants would lead to population explosions that would lower wages for American workers and drain the nation’s resources. The nation’s illegal immigrant population has been estimated to be as high as 25 million.
In addition to providing a pathway to citizenship and reuniting families that have been separated as a result of raids, the Democratic Party of Denver also demanded in its resolution that Congress increase the number of visas for short-term workers; extend legal protections — such as collective bargaining — to all working immigrants; and eliminate privately operated detention centers.
Tancredo, however, says the Democratic Party of Denver is using the resolution as a form of political posturing.
“This is typical of a party that couldn’t care less about the rule of law,” he said. “Its primary focus is increasing its numbers, and they know that most immigrants coming into this country vote Democrat, and they want to increase those numbers — they know they will vote Democrat, period.”

| Carson @ 2009-06-18 07:10:55 | I think they should uphold the rule of law and govern by the rules set forth by the United States Constitution, as they swore they would with their oaths of office.
Back in the sixties the government came into the schools and brainwashed us with the idea we needed to control the population because it was rising so fast. They said the roads would become crowded and we would run out of things like water.
They unleashed abortions, birth control pills, and other forms of Family Planning.
To allow the country to be over run with the criminals in businesses illegal labor while the criminals in the government aid and abet the invasion is a travesty against mankind.
They have seen to it our children were killed to control the population at the same time allowing the world to export their population problems here.
What about our sacrifices, many made against our will?
P.S. We still haven't recovered from the last time the criminals in business were allowed to bring in their slaves. |

| Cathy @ 2009-06-18 07:58:41 | I agree with Tom Tancredo that we need to follow the correct path to leagal immigration. Going about a pathway to leaglize illegal immigrants is going against our constitution our fore fathers have set up. This is not right. I ahave been a nurse for over 20 years working in hospitals watching the system drain in california has been horrible. the drain on the schools systems, prisons. We have more crime today. The jobs our US citizens are losing to the illegals because the illegals will perform the job next to nothing. This is not right. I believe anyone entering the country should work hard and go through the same process to aquire citizenship. Please America call you congressman to fight on this one! |

| Ali @ 2009-06-18 09:38:38 | Ms. Lowery has a funny idea of what constitutes a "civil" right. THERE IS NO CIVIL RIGHT FOR NON CITIZENS TO COME TO THIS COUNTRY OR TO LIVE IN THIS COUNTRY. By definition, civil rights belong to CITIZENS. |

| Bruce Hartman @ 2009-06-18 11:36:18 | Why legalize dope, rape and robery and other illegal acts then we can eliminate crime. Making illegal immigrants legal just because they are here is absurd. Maybe if we do that we should limit the jobs they get only to those occupied by democrats. Then maybe some democrats will understand why some of us are concerned by their illegal presence here. |

| jeffrey @ 2009-06-18 11:58:09 | If you think making illegal aliens legal will help the enconomy your very naive!
The first thing they will do it go on all the social services because generally speaking the majority of them are low wage workers. You thing they would pay taxes, bull! They will qualify for all the tax write offs!!! |

| Ivan @ 2009-06-18 12:38:53 | A comprehensive immigration reform with path to citizenship for undocumented is long overdue and the right thing to do. Obama must follow-up and deliver a reform NOW; I am sick of procrastinations, and excuses. No human being is illegal, and racism ALWAYS loses in America! |

| Julie @ 2009-06-18 12:39:35 | It saddens me to see that most of these comments make vast assumptions about who these people are. And everyone is completely missing the rest of the resolution, like this part: "...Include a path for students who have completed high school or a G.E.D. to obtain conditional residency by enrolling in higher education, the armed forces, any apprenticeship program offered by a labor union, or a community service organization." Not all of these people are a "drain on US resources," or that "the majority of them are low wage workers. HATEFUL! |

| Ed @ 2009-06-18 13:21:00 | There is a MAJOR problem with all the "just legalize em and lets get on with it" crowd.
It's not JUST them you would be allowing in. They then get to bring in all their blood relatives. It is estimated that the 12 million criminals would bring in another 140 million family members. It's called Chain migration and it killing this country. There will be NO amnesty. There may be civil war, but they will be no amnesty. |

| Chris @ 2009-06-18 14:15:47 | Immigration reform will make it easier for illegals to enter and stay here. That is what the Dems and Reps want; cheap labor and votes. Besides, the courts will make any new changes ineffective, just as they have done for the last version of the INA. Moreover, of course, congress will leave in the loopholes they put in last time for criminals, child abusers, sex offenders, drug users, etc. You can verify all this by looking in the INA, or Google it. There are thousands of web sites set up to help aliens to get around the law.
I am for legal immigration and full control of all this county’s borders.

| Brittancus @ 2009-06-18 17:13:37 | The support of illegal immigration will be astronomical to the American taxpayer, but not to the predatory employer and contractors who hire them. Say--YES--to e-verify! It will empty the workplace of illegal labor stealing jobs. Errors can be resolved at the Social Security office, where illegal workers wouldn't dare to go. Say--NO--to any AMNESTY. Last one was full of fraud and never enforced. The 1986 Simpson/Mazzoli bill is still on the books and just need a few amendments to strengthen it' s laws. The Special interest lobby wants to rescind it. Digest more of the facts and unbiased truth at NUMBERSUSA, JUDICIAL WATCH, CAPSWEB, and ALIPAC. At AMERICANPATROL, learn about the massive upsurge on illegal alien criminal activity all across our nation. ANOTHER INTERESTING SITES OFFERS DAYLIGHT ON THE COST OF INCARCERATING ILLEGAL ALIEN CRIMINALS at THEDARKSIDEOFILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND ILLEGALIMMIGRANTIONDAILY
It's not about bigotry but about forced mandated taxes to underwrite illegal immigration. It's about waiting for the next hordes of foreigners, anticipating another BLANKET AMNESTY and ready to rush the border. Both sides of the coin have violent types, who take their activist attitudes to far. It's about massive waves of criminals, poor, uneducated and sick family unification--CHAIN MIGRATION-- that you will be the beneficiary too. INFORM YOUR SENATORS AND CONGRESSMAN--NO--TO ANY AWARDS OR AMNESTY TO LAWBREAKERS.
A traumatic example of runaway benefits to illegal immigrants, where Los Angeles City Councilor Andronivich states 11 billion dollars attributed to these families, that the state has nearly bankrupted itself with a 27 billion dollar crash.
The special interest lobby try to force a face of bigotry or racism on any group that defies open borders and free trade. This has nothing to do with xenophobia. But everything to do with the RULE of LAW and the federal mandates forced on ordinary Americans to support the 20 million plus illegal immigrant invasion. |

| J @ 2009-06-18 18:25:16 | I see plenty of anti-immigration racists here (you can tell them from their bad spelling and threats of civil war). But what you anti-brown person or Stockholm syndrome victims don't get is that there has already been a monetary investment made in these folks as far as our public education system and on the job training. That is an indisputable fact that cannot be taken back. A path to citizenship is the only sound FISCAL reaction to this right-wing created problem (yes morons, all of your big right-wing donors who own meat processing plants and corporate farms brought these folks here initially as cheap labor to undercut your wages). Don't threaten violence, don't hide behind this "rule of law" argument, open your eyes and see what the Tancredo's of this world are shoveling, race hatred that keeps our eyes off of REAL issues like fair wages for all workers. Pull your heads out. |

| Horace @ 2009-06-18 19:43:26 | The basis for the current support of illegal immigrants is the presence of millions who came here under a previous amnesty. When the previous generation of illegal immigrants matured politically, they enticed millions of their friends and family members to do the same thing, with the very expectation that this new group would be granted amnesty. The old group has no respect for our culture of law and order than does the new group. The old group is ruled by its emotions and desire for political power, and political goups like MALDEF and LaRaza will lie, smear and stoop to every low trick in the book to seek power and ethnic primacy, even to point of undermining our very way of life. Say no to amnesty. Write your congressmen today. |

| seth @ 2009-06-18 19:53:44 | I think immigration reform is the most prudent option we have to make right now and it should happen this. A new report by the FBI is out and it says that violent hate crimes are up against those who are perceived to be illegal immigrants. This is due to the negative coverage that immigration receive from the media. So I think immigration reform should happen this year, if not any other reason, for humanitarian reason. After all this is the land of immigrants. |

| Dave @ 2009-06-18 22:09:47 | These Denver Democrats are shameless and pathetic. How dare they push amnesty for millions of illegal foreign workers who cut the line when over 14 million Americans are out of work! |

| conductrix @ 2009-06-19 13:18:13 | @Dave, you obviously didn't read the resolution. It says very clearly that ALL workers are strengthened when there isn't a systemic influx of scab labor, and when all current workers have access to collective bargaining. Or is it that what you really want to say is that there should be no collective bargaining at all?
Also, you are NOT reading that part that asks for reform of backlogs for people already standing in the immigration line. This is why people are "cutting it" as you say. Even if you want to follow the rules, they don't work. Nowhere in the document does it say anything about amnesty.
Don't be so knee-jerk, or are you just a tool of Tancredo's? Think and read with the education the taxpayers got for you! |

| Larry Brown @ 2009-06-20 08:07:38 | Massive illegal immigration has done immeasurable and permanent damage to our nation. Our public schools, emergency care rooms, and jails have been overrun and destroyed by foreigners who have broken our labor, tax, and immigration laws. California is now bankurpt because the bill is over 13 billion dollars a year in taxpayer services for illegals domiciled there. Now President Barack Obama is pushing ahead with his bill to create a massive government run health care system that will include "free" coverage for every new instant citizen United States citizen he creates with his amnesty program. The truth is If Mr. Obama and his ACORN friends get their way, our nation is doomed. |
