Get into the weekend groove early with Thirsty Thursday’s, the fun weekly event hosted by the Sports Column.
Cheap drinks, fun people and great music have made the top-rated sports bar the “it” place to be every Thursday. And with one of the top local cover bands providing musical entertainment tomorrow evening, there’s never been a better time to take advantage of the Column’s $1 well and call drinks, $1 domestic drafts and $3 micro/import drafts that will be served from 9 p.m.-close.
That Eighties Band, which is playing the Sports Column tomorrow for Thirsty Thursday’s, is one of the most convincing cover bands to specialize in ’80s music.
“I know some bands do it as a joke. We certainly have fun with it, but we enjoy the stuff we are doing,” said Travis LeRoy, the band’s founder. “We’re not making fun of it. We’re trying to pull it off as authentically as we can.”
That Eighties Band covers well-known classics by the likes of Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, Def Leppard and The Cure, among many others. Whereas some cover bands will show up in jeans and a T-shirt and play some obscure songs, That Eighties Band commits to their act and brings the attitude and style necessary to honor their source material.
“There’s a good chance that if you grew up on the ‘80s, or even if you just listen to it nowadays, you will know all the songs,” said LeRoy. “Sometimes the crowd sings louder than we are actually playing it, which is amazing.”
While That Eighties Band has been around for six years, LeRoy said the band has seen their popularity skyrocket in recent months. The band is doing around seven shows a month and is even touring through a few cities. LeRoy attributed the band’s recent success to meeting people over the years and being at the right place at the right time.
“Obviously the ’80s thing is having kind of a retro rebirth thing, and that won’t last forever and we certainly know that,” he said. “But right now it’s great, people are really enjoying the ’80s rebirth and we are having a blast.”
