DEGETTE HOLDING QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION ON HEALTH INSURANCE REFORM: U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., vice chair of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, announced yesterday that she will host a “Question and Answer Session about Health Insurance Reform” at 10 a.m. Saturday. DeGette will take questions about the proposed health insurance reform package currently working through Congress. The session will take place at South High School Auditorium, 1700 E. Louisiana Ave. Doors open to the public at 9:15 a.m. Attendance will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Carnage On Larimer: Carnage On Larimer will return to Larimer Street this Saturday with over 500 vehicles spanning the 1930s to early 1970s. The hot rod party includes three city blocks on Larimer Street between 30th and 33rd streets. There’s food, music and beer. The fun starts at 1 p.m. The cost to register is $12 per vehicle. RIDES AND RODS: The 2009 Rides and Rods Weekend is going on this weekend. The event feature hundreds of people who have been touched by autism who will join together to raise funds for autism research, awareness and advocacy. COMMUNITY ART SHOW: Denver Urban Gardens (DUG) and Art Farm are hosting “Harvest,” an outdoor community art show and garden gala. The event will be held at DUG’s West Washington Park Community Garden, 201 Grant St., on Saturday from 4-7 p.m. The Harvest gala will feature garden tours, the works of local artists, live music and beer from Breckenridge Brewery. The event is free and open to the public, though donations are appreciated.
SKYDIVING RECORD TO BE ATTEMPTED: From Friday-Sunday, 70 skydivers will attempt to complete the largest formation skydive ever built in the skies above Colorado. The Go Fast Colorado State Skydiving Record Invitational, an event designed to break a record set eight years ago, will occur at the Mile Hi Skydiving Center at the Longmont Vance Brand Municipal Airport. The record attempts will include record organizer and five-time skydiving world-record holder Jim McCormick.
RITTER WELCOMES CHINESE MINISTRY OF COMMERCE: Gov. Bill Ritter yesterday welcomed the Chinese Ministry of Commerce’s Chamber of Commerce for Machinery and Electronics to Colorado, signing a Memorandum of Cooperation that will promote increased business investments, cooperation and job-creation opportunities. The agreement follows Ritter’s economic development mission to Asia last year. It reaffirms an existing cooperative relationship and targets several economic sectors, including renewable energy, clean technology, information and communication technology, and bio and life sciences.
State Taxpayer Accountability Report: Gov. Bill Ritter and State Treasurer Cary Kennedy yesterday announced the release of the third annual State Taxpayer Accountability Report (STAR). STAR provides information on the state’s financial condition for the last fiscal year, the most recently available audited data. SHERMAN NOMINATED TO RUN FOREST SERVICE: President Obama yesterday nominated the chief of the state’s Department of Natural Resources, Harris Sherman, to run the U.S. Forest Service. The nomination was praised by environmental groups and Democratic lawmakers. The specific position would be Undersecretary for Natural Resources and Environment within the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The nomination still requires Senate confirmation.
CLEANUP PROJECT: The West Denver Coalition is leading a neighborhood clean-up project and day of service as part of its Safe Neighborhoods for Kids outreach efforts in the Westwood neighborhood. BOIGON HOSTING BABY SHOWER: Councilwoman Carol Boigon is hosting a baby shower in her backyard on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. to help thousands of at-risk babies at Denver Health this year. A person’s gift of one or more new baby essentials will help at-risk moms and babies have a good start. The Denver Brass quintet will play while attendees enjoy ice tea and popcorn. Wish list items include disposable diapers, wipers, diaper bags, bibs and socks. Gifts must be new.
CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE ON I-70 PROJECT: The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has completed the concrete repairs on I-70 between Kipling Street and Wadsworth Boulevard as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The project repaired or replaced approximately 1,700 square yards of concrete slabs and replaced 400,000 linear feet of concrete joint sealant along three miles of I-70 between Kipling Street and Wadsworth Boulevard. WEB SITE LAUNCHED TO PROMOTE UNIVERSAL BROADBAND ACCESS ACROSS STATE: The Governor’s Office of Information Technology has partnered with Connected Nation, a national 501(c)3, to launch a Web site for its comprehensive broadband mapping initiative titled Connect Colorado. The site is designed to assess current broadband availability across the state, highlighting those areas that are presently unserved by a broadband provider. The Web site (www.connectcolorado.org) allows for consumer feedback and broadband validation.
Jeffery Nickelson memorial services: Memorial Services for Jeffery Nickelson, founder of Shadow Theatre, will be held at Shadow Theatre, 1468 Dayton St., in Aurora at 10 a.m. Saturday. Nickelson died at the age of 53 on Sept. 5. It is requested that no one wears black and to dress in vibrant colors as mourners will be celebrating Nickelson’s life. Floral tributes may be sent to his daughter ShaShauna Staton at 907 S. Yampa St., No. 201, Aurora, CO 80017. RIBBON CUTTING FOR EZE MOP SHOPPING DISTRICT: Denver City Councilmember Carla Madison and Denver Office of Economic Development Executive Director André Pettigrew will participate in a ribbon cutting event to celebrate the opening of the EZE Mop Shopping District, a new retail development located at the former EZE Mop building at 1223-1227 E. 17th Ave., today at 11 a.m. Completely renovated into three separate retail spaces, the development pays homage to the iconic EZE Mop company that was located at the site since the 1940s. The development includes Soul Haus Menswear and Babylon Floral, which both relocated from Capitol Hill locations. A new women’s boutique, Peppermint, opened at the site as well. “In addition to providing eight new jobs, the EZE Mop Shopping District is contributing greatly to the mix of businesses and economic vitality along 17th Avenue,” said Pettigrew.
