Gov. Ritter unveils new terror prevention videoHolder illustrates how terrorism activity can happen anywhere — including ColoradoDenver Daily News staff reportTuesday, October 6, 2009 | | | Gov. Bill Ritter and U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano promote a new video yesterday called “Recognizing 8 Signs of Terrorism.” |
Gov. Bill Ritter yesterday unveiled a new terrorism-prevention video called “Recognizing 8 Signs of Terrorism” after touring the Center for Empowered Living & Learning in Denver with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
The video was produced by The CELL with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security, Colorado Information and Analysis Center and Colorado Department of Agriculture using a $30,400 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The video, narrated by former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway and 9News anchor Kim Christiansen, will teach viewers how to recognize signs of terrorist activities in their communities.
“Eight years after 9/11, it’s important to remember that the United States is not immune from terror attacks,” Ritter said. “It’s vital that every one of us is prepared to detect, prevent and respond to these types of threats. Empowering the public with knowledge is a key component in creating prepared and vigilant communities. I encourage all Coloradans to see the ‘Recognizing 8 Signs of Terrorism’ video at The CELL because we all have the power to make a difference when we are prepared.”
Holder’s speech
In a speech at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference at the Colorado Convention Center yesterday, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said terrorism activity can happen in any city.
Holder was referring to the arrest of Najibullah Zazi in Aurora a few weeks ago. Zazi is accused of participating in a suspected terrorism bomb plot.
“Few casual observers would cite a mid-sized city like Aurora, Colorado, as a central battleground in the fight against terrorism,” Holder said. “But you and I know better. We know that every city and town in America — and therefore every law enforcement official in America — has a role to play in the fight against terrorism. And I am committed to providing you with the tools and expertise you need to do your part.”
Holder also said the arrest of Zazi may have saved many lives, and he praised the coordination between various law enforcement agencies in the case.
“Working together in a multi-agency, coordinated investigation, we disrupted what we believe was a plot to kill scores of Americans by detonating explosives here in the homeland,” Holder said. “More work remains to be done on this matter. It is my firm belief, though, that the outstanding work of personnel at the federal, state and local level in monitoring and apprehending those committed to doing us harm may very well have saved us from an unspeakable tragedy.”
More on video
“Recognizing 8 Signs of Terrorism” is designed to educate viewers on suspicious activity associated with terrorism. The video also explains where people can report that activity to Colorado authorities.
The video will be available online at www.thecell.org or www.ciac.co.gov. It also is being shown as part of The Cell’s current exhibit, “Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere: Understanding the Threat of Terrorism.”
