Standing the test of time

Seven 30 South 10 years old and is inviting customers to celebrate

John G. Miller

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Larry Herz, owner of Seven 30 South, sits in his restaurant with a glass of wine and invites you to do the same. The restaurant turned 10 years old this month.

A well-known statistic concerning small businesses is that 90 percent of them will close before they are a year old.  And for one to make it to 10 years, it must be something special.

Such is the case for Seven 30 South, An American Bar & Grill, located at 730 S. University Blvd.  Celebrating its 10th anniversary this month, the restaurant has put its stamp on the surrounding Bonnie Brae neighborhood with its quality American cuisine and reasonable prices.

And to show his appreciation to his customers for their years of loyalty and support, Larry Herz, owner of Seven 30 South, said he will give 10 percent off anyone’s bill who mentions the restaurant’s 10th anniversary this month.

“Our clientele are fiercely loyal,” Herz said. “They don’t like chain restaurants, and they support the individually owned businesses in the neighborhood.”

Herz moved to Denver 17 years ago from New York and opened his first restaurant, Carmine’s on Penn, when he was 27 years old.  The fantastic success of that venture prompted him to open more, and three years ago he bought Seven 30 South from original owners Scott Holtzer and Ron Girardi.

The restaurant sports an extensive lunch and dinner menu, which includes a yellow fin tuna salad, pesto chicken linguini and a Philly rib-eye steak sandwich. Brunch features their award-winning “Best of Denver” eggs benedict, as well as an assortment of creative omelets and a “Hangover Sandwich” made with scrambled eggs, sweet and spicy bacon, roasted jalapeno and chipotle aioli.

They also supply a wide variety of vintage wines.

But one of the restaurant’s greatest strengths is the ability to customize their dishes exactly to their customer’s preference.

“You can make any dish any way you want,” said Herz. “You can add anything, subtract anything — our customers appreciate what we do with customization.”

Of all the restaurants he has owned, Herz said Seven 30 South is his favorite.

“I’ve never had a place where everyone knew exactly what they’re doing all the time,” said Herz. “It’s never work. I tell my wife I’m going to work and she said no, you’re going to play. It’s just a great clientele and a great staff.”
