Make your way to the ballet‘Don Quixote’ at the Ellie Caulkins Opera HouseDenver Daily News staff reportThursday, October 15, 2009 | | | ‘DON QUIXOTE’ — The classic ballet “Don Quixote” is opening at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House tomorrow. |
Colorado Ballet is returning to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House this weekend with the classic story ballet, “Don Quixote.”
The story of a middle-aged Spanish gentlemen obsessed with the chivalrous ideals touted in the books he has read will dance to life starting tomorrow. The story’s ballet adaptation, which was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and set to an arresting score by Ludwig Minkus, is a must-see for fans of classic literature or ballet.
“‘Don Quixote’ is one of the original romantic comedies full of humor, love and excitement,” said a statement from Colorado Ballet Artistic Director Gil Boggs. “It continuously captivates audiences with its lively characters, bravado dancing and dramatic third act pas de deux.”
Set in the streets of Barcelona, “Don Quixote” is one of ballet’s most rich and technically challenging works, according to the Colorado Ballet Company. Colorado Ballet’s production will feature a new staging by Boggs and the company’s ballet mistresses, Sandra Brown and Lorita Travaglia.
“This is a very technically demanding ballet and it requires a lot of dancing from all company members,” Boggs said. “We have added a few new twists to the choreography that will certainly challenge the dancers and ultimately showcase their precision and technique.”
Along with the new staging, the production will also see company soloist Sayaka Karasugi step into a principal role. Karasugi will be partnering with Alexei Tyukov. The pair will be one of three rotating principal casts performing the leading roles of Kitri and Basilio.
“I am thrilled to have Karasugi and Tyukov partnered together,” said Boggs. “She has been a member of the company since 2001 and has grown tremendously in her technique and stage presence.”
From the fun and upbeat street drama in Barcelona to the virtuoso and technical demands of the production, Colorado Ballet is promising that their production of “Don Quixote” will be delightful.
