Denver Daily News staff report

Friday, October 23, 2009

FATAL SHOOTING: A man was shot and killed yesterday afternoon while eating inside a popular Japanese and Chinese restaurant just off the 16th Street Mall. Police said the shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. after an altercation broke out inside Chopsticks & Sushi Restaurant at 1630 Welton St. The victim, who was not immediately identified yesterday, was shot multiple times. He was transported to Denver Health where he was later pronounced dead. Police last night said they believe there were no suspects at large but would not elaborate when questioned by the Denver Daily News as to whether there were any suspects in custody.

INDICTMENTS IN DRUG TRAFFICKING CASE: Eleven alleged members or associates of the La Familia drug trafficking organization, who are from the West Slope region of Colorado, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver in July on charges of conspiracy, possession with intent to distribute and distribution of cocaine, federal prosecutors and law enforcement officials said yesterday. Since the indictment was obtained in July, the investigation and arrests continued up to and through yesterday. Of the 11 charged, six were arrested without incident. Five defendants are fugitives from justice. Three other defendants were arrested late Tuesday and are being held on state charges.

FLU WEB SITE: Gov. Bill Ritter announced Colorado’s support of a new patient flu health-assessment Web site yesterday. The site, www.AMAfluhelp.org, is designed to help patients determine the severity of their flu symptoms, receive advice on when to return to work or school, and share the information with their physicians. The site is free, powered by the American Medical Association and Colorado-based Healthy Circles.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT PASSES: U.S. Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., joined the Senate yesterday in passing the National Defense Authorization Act, and the bill has been sent to President Obama to be signed into law. The bill ensures military bases nationwide will receive upgrades, as well as pay raises for service members. And the bill includes a provision strengthening the ability of federal, state and local agencies to investigate and prosecute hate crimes. Colorado military facilities approved for improvements include Fort Carson, Peterson and Schriever Air Force Bases, and the Pueblo Chemical Depot cleanup.

SPECIAL PAYMENTS FOR SERVICE MEMBERS: U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Colo., announced yesterday that special payments are now available to service members who involuntarily had their enlistments extended due to stop-loss orders prompted by the 9/11 attacks. The Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay will provide $500 for every month they were forced to remain active “in recognition of the hardship placed on these troops and their families.” Service members from every branch of the military will receive compensation.

FURLOUGH DAY: Most City and County of Denver offices will be closed today as part of a scheduled furlough day to save the city money. Each furlough day saves the city approximately $1 million. The Mayor’s office, City Council offices, the Auditor’s office, the Denver Public Library, recreation centers and most city agencies will all be closed. The Denver District Attorney’s office will remain open on a limited basis.

BILL TO ESTABLISH CONSUMER FINANCIAL PROTECTION AGENCY MOVES: Legislation to establish an independent agency to protect consumers from unfair or abusive financial services was approved yesterday by the House Financial Services Committee. The Consumer Financial Protection Agency is part of the most momentous reforms of the financial industry since the Great Depression. The bill must now make it past the full House of Representatives. U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Colo., was one of the lawmakers to vote for the legislation.

DANIELS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS PROGRAM RANKED: The University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business Executive MBA Program has been ranked for the second straight year as one of the top EMBA programs in the world, according to the Financial Times EMBA rankings. Daniels is the sole Colorado school named on the list, joining such illustrious institutions as London Business School, New York University, and the Helsinki School of Economics.

MILEHICON THIS WEEKEND: The 41st annual MileHiCon, the Rocky Mountain region’s largest science-fiction convention, will be held this weekend at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center at 7800 E. Tufts Ave. The convention will feature more than 80 authors and speakers, a Sci-Fi/fantasy art show, round-the-clock gaming, dealers of Sci-Fi/fantasy/horror materials, and a masquerade contest. Also on hand will be the Critter Crunch, the first robotic combat competition that spawned a legion of copycat events.
