Everything you want in DurangoIt’s a town where you can get away from it all without getting away from it allGene Davis, DDN Staff WriterWednesday, November 4, 2009 | | | ALL ABOARD — A train ride through winter wonderland is one of many attractions in Durango. |
Durango is a mountain town that embraces contradictions.
The town’s downtown bustles with city life, but the remote mountains are just a few minutes away. Durango prides itself as a historical spot, but it offers all the modern conveniences anyone could want.
“(Durango) embraces a lifestyle thatÉkind of harkens back to a simpler time that we all go for,” said Durango spokeswoman Anne Barney.” Yet we still have wi-fi.”
Starting later this month, the Cascade Canyon Winter Train will help anyone who choo-choo-chooses to hop on board get into the holiday spirit. The steam train takes passengers 52-miles round trip through the San Juan National Forest while remaining in the comfort of heated couches.
“The winter train takes you to places that haven’t been touched,” said Barney. “It’s a pristine wonderland. It transports you into beautiful scenery and quiet.”
Visitors to Durango can relax in style thanks to the plentiful number of spas Durango has to offer. Spaaah Day Spa, 934 Main Ave., is independently owned and offers a variety of massages, facials, waxings and more. For more information, visit SpaaahShop.com.
Trimble Spa and Natural Hot Springs, 6475 Durango Road 203, features two naturally heated mineral pools for relaxation. The hot springs also offers 20 therapeutic massage and body treatment options.
For a town its size, Durango has a bevy of restaurant options. In fact, it has more restaurants per capita than San Francisco. Durango also boasts four microbreweries.
“We have a high base of local support, which is why we have so many options,” said Barney. “We kind of boast ourselves as being a real town.”
Frontier and United Airlines offer direct flights to Durango. The flights make a picturesque mountain town only about an hour away.
