MAN CHARGED IN SEXUAL ASSAULT ON CHILD

Denver Daily News staff report

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

MAN CHARGED IN SEXUAL ASSAULT ON CHILD: Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has formally charged a man in connection with repeated sexual assaults on a teenage girl, allegedly arranged by the girl’s mother for money. Mark Mathias, 28, has been charged with soliciting for child prostitution, sexual assault on a child, and sexual assault on a child pattern of abuse. The charges allege that Mathias sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl from June 2008 until this March. The charges further allege that the defendant paid the victim’s mother, who allowed the sexual assaults to occur. The mother was charged earlier with pimping of a child and pandering of a child, and remains in custody in the Denver County Jail; her bond is set at $200,000. Mathias also remains in custody in the Denver County Jail; his bond is set at $100,000.

Penry leaving race? A variety of reports said yesterday that Sen. Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, is bowing out of the Colorado governor race. He is reportedly backing fellow Republican candidate Scott McInnis. McInnis’ campaign said that, “Scott believes that Josh’s future is bright and today is his day.” Gov. Bill Ritter’s campaign, however, said, “the Republican party leaders had a choice to make Ń take a new approach or return to the same failed playbook of the Bush-Delay years Ń and with Scott McInnis as they’re nominee they have chosen to take us back to the same old tired politics of the past.”

BROOKS TOWER: The Housing of Urban Development reinstated the Brooks Tower for Federal Housing Association financing last week. The Brooks Tower is a 42-story high-rise, residential condominium building at 1020 15th St. Residents were asked to approve an amendment to the building rules and regulations that raised the minimum occupancy for rentals from one week to one month. HUD’s rules, as well as many private sector lenders and mortgage insurance companies, require a minimum rental time period to encourage a stable community.

CANDIDATE FORUM: The Colorado Republican candidates eyeing a seat for the U.S. Senate are squaring off today at a forum being held by the Centennial Institute Ń a think tank launched this year by the Colorado Christian University (CCU). The forum is taking place at 7 p.m. at the CCU Music Center Auditorium, which is located on the corner of 1st and Garrison in Lakewood.
