Body found in Denver alleyDaniel Williams, DDN Staff WriterFriday, November 20, 2009 | |
Police found the body of a person lying by a Dumpster in and alley between York and Josephine streets on 43rd Avenue, just a block south of I-70, at about 10:30 a.m. yesterday.
A witness on the scene, who said he discovered the body and alerted police, said the victim was a black woman, but police would not confirm yesterday what the victim’s gender or race was, nor would they release the cause of death, saying that will be pending an autopsy. However, an officer on the scene told the Denver Daily News that the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
A nearby neighbor also told the Denver Daily News, “Just after midnight I heard what sounded like two gunshots.”
Police said the case is being investigated as a homicide.
A fleet of Denver police and investigators spent the rest of the morning and hours into the afternoon yesterday looking for evidence in the very dirty and trashed-out alley.
Neighbors on the block said that the alley is often used for residential traffic, and homeless individuals can be seen daily digging in the Dumpsters.
The northeast Denver neighborhood is recognized as being “tough,” a neighbor said. She added, “It is scary knowing something like that can happen literally right in our own backyard.”
Denver police have not released any additional information.
On Wednesday, just about a mile away from yesterday’s suspected homicide, a man was found shot to death in an alley at 3356 Blake St. at 6:51 a.m.
“We don’t know about a connection right now; however, it something we are certainly looking at,” said Denver police Lieutenant Matt Murray. “Two murders in two nearby alleys in two days — we certainly have noticed, but are not drawing any conclusions,”
No suspect information is being released at this time. Denver Police are asking if anyone heard or saw anything suspicious in the area to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
