All dogs aren’t alike

And not all dogs can be trained the same, author says

All dogs might go to heaven, but anyone who has owned more than one dog knows that all dogs are certainly not alike.

Celebrity dog training guru Joel Silverman has seen the variety of dog personalities firsthand after spending 35 years in the animal training industry. The former host of Animal Planet’s “Good Dog U” has written a book with a color system that details the five personality types of dogs. There are dogs that are off the wall (red), high strung (orange), mellow (yellow), apprehensive (green) and terrified of everything (blue).

By identifying what type of personality a dog has, an owner can then effectively tailor the training to the dog, according to Silverman.

“What works best for one dog does not work well for another,” he said.

Before training starts, Silverman said it’s important for an owner to develop a bond with their dog. It’s crucial to get a dog in a place where they want to please their owner, he said.

Plenty of experience

Silverman got his start in animal training while living in a trailer and working at Sea World in San Diego. He later moved back to Los Angeles to train animals for television shows, commercials and movies.

In 1999, he got his biggest break when he was asked to host “Good Dog U” on Animal Planet. The family educational show was a hit for the station.

Silverman has been on the road since March promoting “What Color is Your Dog?”. The tour is hitting 80 cities in 40 states, and his slew of Colorado Camp Bow Wow appearances start tomorrow in Castle Rock. His free appearances will include a one-hour seminar and book signings.

“I really want to get (What Color is Your Dog?) in the hands of people who have just adopted a dog, or are looking to adopt, so we can get them on the right track and really get a nice game plan for them as they train their dog,” he said.

Where and When: Camp Bow Wow, 500 1st St., in Castle Rock tomorrow night at 7, Camp Bow Wow, 2125 S. Jasmine, in Denver on Sunday at 1 p.m. Camp Bow Wow, 3645 Brighton Blvd., in LoDo on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.
