The Art District on Santa Fe is giving itself a well-deserved pat on the back with an exhibit that looks back at 2009.
Art District Best of 2009 is a juried show that compiles a wide variety of art that has been shown in the Art District on Santa Fe throughout the year. Paintings, sculptures and photography are among the featured mediums. The curators of the Denver Art Museum and Foothills Art Center chose the pieces for the show, so viewers know they will only be seeing the best of what was offered.
According to Lacey Jones, general manager for 910 Arts, the gallery’s owner, Cheryl Spector, and event organizer Dana Cain had wanted for several years to put on an event in the Art District on Santa Fe that would serve as a celebration of the area’s art scene. When Cain and Spector finally met up, they decided to go for it and make a big gala out of the event, Jones said.
“I think what it does is help bring more attention to the area,” she said.
Jones added that 2009 has been a particularly strong year for the Art District on Santa Fe. With First Fridays becoming increasingly popular and a wider variety of art being shown, the area’s art scene over the past 11 months has grown in size, quality and popularity.
“It continues to get bigger and better and we just hope to continue that path by having this as an annual event and continuing to raise awareness of what the artists are doing,” said Jones.
Art District Best of 2009 is a great introductory course for people who haven’t made it out to the area on First Friday. It’s also an opportunity for artists and other gallery owners who haven’t been able to make it out to the Art District on Santa Fe because they were busy with their own happenings, according to Jones.
“It’s an opportunity for all of us to come together,” she said.
