RENEWABLE ENERGY STANDARD BILL MOVES: House Bill 1001, sponsored by Sen. Gail Schwartz, D-Snowmass, and Sen. Bruce Whitehead, D-Hesperus, and Rep. Max Tyler, D-Golden, passed on the Senate floor yesterday. The bill would increase Colorado’s Renewable Energy Standard to 30 percent by 2020. That means that nearly a third of the power generated from large utility companies like Xcel and Black Hills must come from renewable sources, like solar and wind, in the next 10 years. HB 1001 will now be heard on the Senate floor today for third and final reading.


FORECLOSURE BILL MOVES: A House committee yesterday unanimously passed a bill that would amend the foreclosure statutes to provide that a lender, alone or in conjunction with a local government, may obtain a court order accelerating the foreclosure sale for a residential property upon proof that it has been abandoned. “It is the American Dream to own a home, and for most Coloradans, their greatest asset is their home,” said a statement from Rep. Dianne Primavera, D-Broomfield. The bill now moves onto the House as a whole. 


DRIVERS LICENSE BILL MOVES: A House committee yesterday approved a bill that would give members of the military the option of buying a special driver’s license that would identify them as members of the United States Armed Forces. The cost for the voluntary option would be $15. The money generated by the purchases, which is expected to raise approximately $243,000, would provide funding for Colorado’s roads and bridges. The bill now moves on to the full House for consideration.


LABOR DEPARTMENT ON TWITTER, FACEBOOK: The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment announced yesterday that it now has a presence on Twitter and Facebook. Links are provided to the Department’s Twitter and Facebook pages from its Web site at Colorado.gov/cdle.


UNUSED MEDICATIONS BILL MOVES: Rep. Dianne Primavera, D-Broomfield, wants to help Haiti and other victims of natural disaster receive the critical medications they need. Senate Bill 115 would send unused prescription medicine to those affected by natural disasters. The bill passed in the Health and Human Services Committee yesterday by a vote of 10-1. 


LOWE’S GRAND OPENING: Lowe’s of Denver will hold a grand opening celebration and open its doors to the public this morning at 7 a.m. As part of the celebration, Lowe’s will hold Gift Card Match Day Ń buy a gift card and Lowe’s will match purchases up to $5,000 to support the Metro Denver Habitat for Humanity’s next building project. The action takes place at 400 South Zuni Street.


MAMMOGRAMS BILL MOVES: Rep. Dianne Primavera’s, D-Broomfield, House Bill 1252 would ensure that the decisions about mammograms will be made between individuals and their provider. The bill would allow for anyone, regardless of age, to have their mammogram covered by their insurance, when a provider determines there is risk. The bill passed in the Health and Human Services Committee 10-1 yesterday. 


SPECIAL MEETING TODAY ACKNOWLEDGING THE RESIGNATION OF COUNCILMAN GARCIA: The Denver City Council will hold a special meeting today acknowledging the resignation of Councilman Rick Garcia. The City Council will declare that a vacancy exists and call for a special election.


BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS AT JIFFY LUBE LOCATIONS: Denver Jiffy Lube locations on Saturday are providing free blood pressure screenings. The promotion is part of Jiffy Lube’s third year of “Maintenance Partners for Life” supporting the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Campaign.
