While the new hip Broadway musicals like “Spring Awakening” and “Avenue Q” are commendable for trying to push the boundaries of musical theatre, it’s still hard to beat an old-school show done right.
The near flawless production of “Mary Poppins” showing at the Buell Theatre through April is chicken soup for the theatre lover’s soul. Despite the numerous theatre trends that have come and gone over the decades Ń “Rent” is as much of a ’90s time capsule as a flannel t-shirt and a Cranberries album Ń the classic tale of a nanny who helps a family reconnect and realize what’s important in life remains as timeless as ever.
“People walk out of the show going so much hope, and so much magic,” said Ellen Harvey, the actress who plays the mean nanny Miss Andrew. “I think it’s just a wonderful piece for people to see.”
The production of “Mary Poppins” that’s playing at the Buell combines parts of the 1964 film with the original books written by P.L. Travers. As a result, people who are only familiar with the film will discover new songs and characters.
Harvey, whose character doesn’t exist in the film because Disney deemed her too dark, says that audiences have reacted well to the show’s lesser-known parts.
“People come out on name recognition but then they are completely surprised at all the other levels and colors that have been added to this piece,” she said. “It really is a first class, A-plus musical.”
Harvey said that Denver audiences have walked out of “Mary Poppins” happy. Everyone from grandparents to grandparents have found something they love, and Harvey believes that the story’s message has hit home for many people.
“(Mary Poppins) whole mantra is that anything can happen if you let it and get out of your own way,” she said. “I think we could all follow that.”
