MAN SHOT AT GUN SHOWDenver Daily News staff reportMonday, March 22, 2010 | |
MAN SHOT AT GUN SHOW: A man was shot, reportedly in the chest, at the Tanner Gun Show Saturday. Around 2 p.m., a gunshot was heard at the 700-table gun show located at the Denver Merchandise Mart. The man, whose condition was unknown as of yesterday afternoon, was taken to Denver Health Medical Center. How the man was shot is still under investigation. There are reports that a dealer was showing a customer the gun and it accidentally went off when the gun was picked up. That the gun was loaded is another mystery, since all guns at the show are supposed to be unloaded and checked by the show’s security, according to the Tanner Gun Show Web site.
MOTHER GETS 20 YEARS AFTER IGNORING TWO-YEAR-OLD SON’S FATAL BURNS: Isela Reyes-Talamantes, 25, who rode around running errands for hours with her boyfriend as her two-year-old son was dying a slow death from scalding burns on his body, was sentenced on Friday to 20 years in prison. Reyes-Talamantes pleaded guilty earlier to child abuse resulting in death. She was not accused of causing the scalding burns that caused the death of her son, Elijah Archuleta, but she failed to make any effort to seek medical care that could have saved his life and later lied to the police in an effort to protect both herself and her boyfriend from prosecution. Her boyfriend, John Vigil, 25, is facing trial later this year in connection with Elijah’s death Ń he is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. Denver Chief Deputy District Attorney Kerri Lombardi, in arguing for a lengthy sentence, told the Court that Elijah was alive and in his car seat next to his sister when Reyes-Talamantes was picked up from work by Vigil on Nov. 7, 2008. They spent hours driving around running errands, including stops to buy groceries and fast food. Eight hours later, when they arrived at St. Anthony Central Hospital complaining that Elijah had choked on a piece of food, the boy was already dead. He had suffered burns over 75 percent of his body that were so severe he had large patches of skin missing from his body, including his face and even the bottom of his feet.
FUTURE REC CENTER SITE PURCHASE FINALIZED: On March 9, the City of Denver finalized its purchase of the Church in the City site. The approximately 2.56-acre land, located at 1530 Josephine St., was acquired for $6 million and will be the future home of the central Denver recreation center. Denver Parks and Recreation will fence off the site for safety during the assessment process, which will last a few months. City Councilmembers Jeanne Robb and Carla Madison, along with Denver Parks and Recreation, are meeting with area neighborhood organizations and East High school representatives to determine interim uses for the property.
WITH GENERAL FUND IN BALANCE, GOP ASKS DEMS TO ROLL BACK SUSPENSION OF TAX CREDITS, EXEMPTIONS: Colorado’s Legislative Council released its economic forecast and there was promising news: The fiscal year 2009-10 General Fund budget is in balance and there is no need for additional cuts, although there is still a projected shortfall in the fiscal year 2010-11 General Fund. According to the report, Colorado’s economy is slowly recovering from the “Great Recession,” but weak real estate markets, high debt levels, bank failures, and tight credit conditions will constrain economic growth over the next few years. A General Fund shortfall will exist in fiscal years 2010-11 and 2011-12. Budget estimates in this report do not incorporate short-term solutions, cost increases due to rising caseloads and inflation and a drop off in budgetary support from federal stimulus funds. In light of these projections, Colorado Republicans are calling on Denver Democrats to roll back the suspension of tax credits and exemptions recently signed into law for the current fiscal year. According to the budget and revenue forecast released by the non-partisan Legislative Council, Colorado has $35.1 million more available in the General Fund than previously predicted, reflecting a revenue upturn. That is more than enough to cover the $13 million that will be generated from the rollback of tax credits and exemptions this fiscal year, according to the GOP.
